Response to Comments by Rep. Fitzwater on Medicaid Expansion
On April 4, when asked about Medicaid expansion for Missouri, Rep. Fitzwater (R-Potosi) really crossed the line.
Saying that covering uninsured, working Missourians would make them too "dependent," he went on to state, "When you go to the zoo, there's a sign that says don't feed the animals. There's a reason. They keep coming back."
Our hearts break every time we are reminded how calloused, how indifferent some of our elected officials are to the suffering of our neighbors. But then we remember that for every Paul Fitzwater, there are many more Missourians who believe that every person has infinite worth and every person deserves access to quality, affordable health care.
We must keep amplifying the voices of those Missourians who care for their neighbors. We must speak out and say clearly that it is not okay to sterotype or dismiss people who are uninsured.
There are many economic and policy reasons to expand Medicaid in Missouri. But above all else, we believe access to health care is a moral issue. We cannot stand by while people in our communities are suffering, and even dying, because they can't afford to see a doctor. We have the means to create a better system, and the obligation to do so.

Missouri Health Care for All is a non-partisan, statewide movement of more than 130 faith and community organizations and more than 8,000 Missourians who have endorsed a set of shared Principles. Our Principles affirm, based on faith and moral values, that every Missourian should have access to quality, affordable health care, no matter where they live or how much money they make.
Our movement works to advance our shared Principles by educating members of our endorsing organizations and the public and by taking action on behalf of policies and practices that are consistent with our Principles.
We are working now to:
- Pass the proposed Medicaid expansion in Missouri
- Educate Missourians about what is in the federal health reform law that passed
- Work with decision makers to ensure that the new health reform laws are implemented well in Missouri
- Protect access to health care and social services for Missourians who need them
- Build the grassroots movement that will allow us to defend and expand access to health care in the years to come!
We are guided by a statewide board of directors, with local leaders and members throughout the state.
Join Us! We invite you to read our Principles, and if you agree with them, join our movement by endorsing the Principles here. We'll keep you informed about health care issues and give you easy, timely ways to make a difference!
